20,000 Leagues under the steam
Crew and sub management in an underwater SteamPunk universe.
In 20,000 Leagues Under the Steam you play the captain of a submarine in a world entirely underwater for as long as anybody can remember. However, it was not always this way and legend has it that a legendary ARC the first submarine carried humanity below the waves to start a new life. As captain of this sub, you're in charge of navigating the world and managing your crew in order to make a decent living in this harsh new world. Recently though rumors begin surfacing that maybe a piece of the ARC has been found, and the race to be the first to discover it begins!
20,000 Leagues Under the Steam or 20K-LUTS as the Dev team referred to it, was developed over the course of a semester by 4 students from scratch. The game is a top-down Rogue-like style game that involves exploring the map while progressing through an optional storyline, fighting various enemies, and upgrading your ship. You must effectively manage crew members while in combat to preform specific tasks such as piloting or weapons, as well as fix leaks and damage to your ship when it occurs. Survive through combat encounters and you will be rewarded with Scrap currency, and possibly new parts with which to upgrade your ship. These upgrades include flat statistics boosts as well as new compartments and systems to customize your sub with. The storyline is completely optional but rewards the player with an in-depth look at the game world and sets them off on an epic quest. Completing the storyline will also reward the player with new crew members to recruit, as well as new sub models to use on their next playthrough.

Our team was very small but we were able to get quite a lot done in the semester and ended up completing chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10 of the narrative adventure in 20K-LUTS. They are all playable, with the later ones being accessed via a shortcut in order to skip ahead in the plot (A + Left Mouse click once Minefield chapter of story is completed). Overall the game was an amazing experience in learning how to effectively use and manage agile development in a small team, as well as how to plan realistically for what a small development team can do within a small amount of time.
